She should have…

Katya stood in the doorway of her boyfriends home, trembling with fear and uncertainty. The knob of the door was frigid in her hand but she couldn’t let go nor could she seem to turn it. Jordan never put his hands on her before.

All seemed well as they sat together on his black futon talking about nothing. Suddenly Jordan turned to her with fire in his eyes. For reasons unknown to the both of them he pushed her face into the mattress and slapped her cheek over and over again. Eleven times before he let her up. Stunned and stinging, Katya fled from the room, silent tears streaming down her face. She didn’t know what to think as she approached the front door.

She stood for a moment, hand on the knob, wondering what happens now. Does she leave and be silent? Does she call the police?

She should have called the police. She should have left and never returned. Ignored his phone calls and texts until he lost interest or found a new target.

She didn’t leave. She had already fallen so hard in love with Jordan, leaving wasn’t an option for her. So she stayed and suffered in silence.

What would become of Katya and Jordan? Only time would tell. Would Jordan strike her again? Absolutely. Would she leave? No. Not for a long time.

She should have left. She didn’t.
